Ban Banana & Ban Soca???

Get this, a lecturer at the Cipriani Labour College Dr Kwame Nantambu has come out and bad and called for soca music to be banned. The Dog's ears rose atfter hearing this. His claim is that SOCA is responsible for a lack of morals in today's society. Soca music! This learned individual has obviously chosen the wrong tree to bark up and especially during the wrong season.

Don't get me wrong the Dog is not about to bash Dr Nantambu as i have read a couple of his articles and the guy is good. BUT. . . soca being the cause of a lack of morals. Come on doc!

I am aware that with everything there are always bad seeds and exceptions to the norm. Yes there are soca songs (and dancehall and reggae and r&b and rap and rock and country and this list goes on) that encourage and promote negative aspects of our existence, but who is to tell the artist not to have that thought in his head? Who is to tell the Dog not to bark?

Isn't freedom of expression encouraged or are we trying to emulate the government of Burma that restricts Internet access through software-based censorship that limits the materials citizens can access on-line in order to stifle their thoughts??

The song that is in the fire now is Ian 'Bunji Garlin' Alvarez's Banana.
"Good banana, long banana she want country and town banana"

The Dog says kudos to Mr Garlin for his creativity and for also carrying on a trend that has lead to the growth of calypso and soca music. The double entendre. Trinidadiands have always been given credit for being gifted at this. From calypso icons such as Dr Slinger Francisco aka the Mighty Sparrow with "Salt Fish" & "Mae Mae" to Raphael De Leon aka the Dean of Calypso aka the Roaring Lion with "Netty Netty" & "Marianne". How are these songs any different to 'Banana'?

According to Dr Nantambu can these songs be also considered 'musical pornography'? hmmm

The Dog wishes he had heard Dr Nantambu in his entirety to ensure that he wasn't misunderstood cuz ah mean he is a Dr.

To wrap this up as i have to get back to trying to catch my tail on this black Friday, Calypso & Soca = Trinidad & Tobago and i leave you with the words of the very wise philosopher Plato

"Music gives a soul to the universe,
wings to the mind,
flight to the imagination,
and life to everything"
